Swimming with Dolphins in Zanzibar: Everything You Need to Know

12 June 2026 · 5 min read

One of Zanzibar's most sought-after experiences is swimming with wild dolphins in the open ocean. The village of Kizimkazi on the island's southern tip is home to two resident pods — humpback dolphins and spinner dolphins — that can be found in these waters year-round. On a good morning, you'll slip into the ocean alongside dozens of them. It's genuinely breathtaking.

Where to Go: Kizimkazi

Kizimkazi is a small fishing village at the southern tip of Zanzibar, about 55km from Stone Town (approximately 1 hour by car). This is the main departure point for dolphin tours. Two villages make up the area: Kizimkazi Mkunguni and Kizimkazi Dimbani — both run dolphin trips.

What Types of Dolphins Will You See?

  • Spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) — famous for their acrobatic spinning leaps, they live in large energetic pods
  • Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) — slightly larger, more grey-pink in colour, generally calmer
  • Both species are resident year-round — no specific season required
  • Pod sizes range from 10 to over 100 individuals depending on the time of year

What to Expect on a Dolphin Tour

Tours typically depart early morning (6–8am) on traditional wooden outrigger boats. Guides use their knowledge of the dolphins' feeding and resting patterns to locate the pods. Once found, guests slip quietly into the water — no jumping, no splashing — and the dolphins decide whether to approach.

On a good day, dolphins swim directly towards and around you, curious and playful. On a slower day, they may pass at a distance. The experience is entirely dependent on the dolphins' mood — which is part of what makes it a genuine wild wildlife encounter rather than a performance.

💡 LOCAL TIP

Manage your expectations. These are wild animals. Some mornings are extraordinary — dolphins all around you for 20 minutes. Other mornings they're feeding and keep their distance. Both are genuinely special. Guides with many years' experience have the best results — ask how long your guide has been operating before booking.

Best Time to Go

Dolphins are present year-round at Kizimkazi, making it one of the most reliable wild dolphin experiences in the world. Early morning (before 9am) is best — the dolphins are most active and curious, seas are calmer, and there are fewer tour boats in the water simultaneously.

How Much Does It Cost?

  • Dolphin swimming tour (2–3 hours from Kizimkazi): $35–55 per person
  • Boat hire (for a private group): $80–150 for the whole boat
  • Full-day tour combining dolphins + snorkelling + Sandbar: $60–90 per person
  • Transport from Stone Town return: included in most organised tours, or $30–40 by taxi

Responsible Wildlife Guidelines

Dolphin tourism at Kizimkazi has grown significantly, and some operators don't follow responsible wildlife practices. Overly aggressive approaches chase and stress the animals. Choose your operator carefully and look for these signs of a responsible tour:

  • Guide enters the water quietly — no jumping or splashing
  • Boat approaches slowly from the side, never cutting across the pod's path
  • No touching — guides should actively discourage touching the dolphins
  • No more than 5–6 people in the water at once
  • If dolphins show signs of stress (diving deep, swimming away fast), the guide pulls everyone out
  • Tour does not chase dolphins at high speed

💡 LOCAL TIP

Ask your hotel or a trusted operator for a Kizimkazi guide recommendation rather than booking with someone who approaches you on the street. The difference in experience quality — and how the dolphins are treated — is significant.

Combining Dolphins with Other Experiences

Most operators combine the dolphin trip with snorkelling on the nearby sandbar and reef, making for a full and excellent morning on the water. Some full-day tours also stop at the ancient Kizimkazi Mosque — the oldest mosque in sub-Saharan Africa, dating to 1107 AD — making for a rich combination of natural and historical experiences.
